THE LATER HOUSE'S GLORY (A Temple Is Needed)

The Later House's Glory
(A Temple Is Needed)

"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?"—1 Corinthians 3:16

Temples, ancient and modern, stand as silent sentinels of humanity’s quest for the divine. These sacred structures, whether nestled in bustling cities or serene landscapes, serve as bridges between the earthly and the ethereal, providing spaces where the former venerates the latter.

When, as a child, I first learned about the story of the Tower of Babel, I was shocked by God’s anger towards the builders. To me, it seemed harsh to punish them for simply wanting to build a magnificent structure. In my secret disapproval, I concluded that God was just paranoid towards those innocent, brave builders.

However, I recently learned that the tower was more than just a structure. It was a Ziggurat—a Mesopotamian temple building dedicated to the false god, Marduk—who was falsely credited with the creation of all things, including humans! For me, that finally breathed sense into the whole story. So, God was not paranoid towards the magnificent structure nor its builders, but He was opposing the false god Marduk and its temple.

Ironically, from the onset of creation, God Himself made provision for a temple—a meeting place between Him, the Divine Creator, and the natural creatures, where He would be glorified.

At creation, mankind was God's choice of temple; hence, the first man, Adam, was made in God's own image and after God's own likeness, and into his nostrils was breathed the breath of life (Zoe)—God's own eternal life (Genesis 1:26, 2:7). Therefore, Adam was a fit head for God's creation, and through him, God purposed to live among, rule through, and be glorified in all of His creation.

However, Adam, the first man, lost his glorified place in creation when he failed to abide by the words of the Creator God who indwelled him. Being deceived by the devil, Adam chose to live by his conscience, thereby swinging the door wide open for the entrance of sin, and with sin came death (through the withdrawal of God's life). From Adam, sin (and death) reigned unto all, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

And while the Messiah (the deliverer of mankind from sin and death) tarried, God's Spirit could only come upon men but never indwell any.

But thanks be to God through Jesus Christ, who took on flesh about 2000 years ago, that He might taste death on behalf of all mankind and, through death, destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and freely restore eternal life to as many as receive Him through faith.

These are the new breed of men, restored, recreated, and indwelled, of which the apostle Paul boldly declared, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them"_Ephesians 2:10.

Now we see that the Christian reality of God indwelling men is no new concept but merely the restoration of the original order proposed in creation.

May God grant us the grace to live daily as God's chosen temples, in Jesus' name. Amen!
